US famine 

This winter is going to not be good. It's going to be a lean winter, and I don't think that the united states has been through a truly lean winter in decades.

The size of the food logistics network in the US has ensured that, up to this point, droughts affecting food supplies haven't impacted national food supplies because food supplies have been dispersed enough to not be affected by regional shortages.

All of california, especially the central california basin where 1/4 of the staple foods in the US are grown, is currently experiencing extreme drought. In my area, the Pacific Northwest, the heatwaves and drought have been so severe as to impact fresh produce; anything that's available in stores is of very bad quality, because the farmers had to rush to harvest the food before it rotted.

The US has grown accustomed to food abundance. This isn't a repeat of the Dust Bowl famine, but it might be something close.
